FAQs
What is stainless steel?
- Stainless steel is a highly durable metal made of Iron and Chromium that can withstand the wear and tear of everyday activities.
Does stainless steel tarnish?
- Stainless steel is highly resistant to tarnish, discoloring, and corrosion. It contains chromium and when exposed to oxygen it forms a thin invisible layer called chromium oxide. (Rust can form when this layer is damaged from exposure to cleaners, chloride, high humidity, high salinity environments, and/or mechanical abrasions)
Can I wet my stainless steel jewelry?
- Shower: You can wear your stainless steel jewelry in the shower, water will not cause it to rust.
- Pool: Bleach in the water can cause the chromium layer of steel to wear off as it reacts with the water’s chlorine. Once the chromium layer is damaged, the steel will begin to rust.
-
Ocean: Sand in the ocean is harsh and can scratch the surface of the steel. (Stainless steel does not rust easily but can get scratched or stained when exposed to other elements. It is advised you removed your jewelry prior to entering the pool/ocean)
What is 925 sterling silver?
- Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% of other metals (usually copper).
Can I shower with sterling silver?
- Water does not damage sterling silver but does cause silver to oxidize (darken) faster. Water containing chlorine, salts, or harsh chemicals will affect the look of your sterling silver. We suggest removing your sterling silver jewelry prior to swimming or showering.
What is 18k gold plated?
- 18K gold plated jewelry is made of sterling silver or other base metal covered with a thin gold layer that consists of 75% pure gold.
Does 18k gold plated jewelry tarnish?
- On average, gold plated jewelry can last about two years before the gold plating begins to tarnish and wear down. This length of time can be longer or shorter depending on how you maintain your jewelry.
How to clean my jewelry?
- Gold-plated jewelry should be wiped down with a damp cotton ball or microfiber cloth after every wearing to remove smudges and surface soil. A more thorough cleaning should be done after exposure to chlorine, alcohol, acids, and sulfur compounds that cause the base metals to tarnish.
- Stainless steel jewelry should be cleaned with soap and water. Pour mild liquid soap into a container with warm water. Soak the stainless steel jewelry in the solution for 15-20 minutes then wipe clean with your jewelry cloth.
- Sterling silver jewelry should be cleaned with half a cup of white vinegar and two tablespoons of baking soda in a glass. Place your sterling silver inside the mix and allow it to sit for three hours. Then rinse and dry with cleaning cloth.
